Art Residency
Sunalta students completed their art residency with Mount Pleasant Art Centre this week. The connections to curriculum concepts and enjoying the process of creating art was magical. Every student was proud and eager to share their projects. Look forward to a Sunalta art gallery to celebrate our learning in the near future! Thank you to Nikki, Maggie, Scott, and Laurie for bringing their artistic guidance and love of being an artist to Sunalta School. Thank you to school council for funding this incredible opportunity.
Let Kindness Grow Pink Shirt Day
Students took the time to pause and think about how they show kindness both to themselves and to others as we recognized pink shirt day. Classes read books, made personal messages about how to be kind, or spent time with buddies creating a mural of flowers and love. Our Grade 6 classes went to the Calgary Hitman ‘Be Brave’ event for the first time with other students from all over the city. Thank you to our school council for funding this trip and to our amazing parent volunteers!
Black History Month
Our grade 3 students have been immersed in the art of Alma Thomas, an important African-American female artist, known for her vibrant abstract paintings. She was a full-time artist and teacher that had to endure segregation and prejudice throughout her life. Sunalta students learned about her artistic process using primary colours and how to mix them to create a gradient from the inside out. Learning about people, cultural contexts and history is quite impactful through children’s own interpretations of art.
Traffic and Pedestrian Safety: A reminder that both pedestrians and drivers need to be safe on the roads around the school. We ask that drivers take a moment to read: 9 Ways to Share the Road and Keep All Users Safe | AMA
Families should also take time to talk about pedestrian safety and review how to be safe crossing the road. walking down the street and being dropped off.
- Young children should always be accompanied by an adult when crossing the street.
- Talk to your child about being a safe pedestrian while you walk with them, starting when they are toddlers. Use the sidewalk, cross at crosswalks, and walk without distractions (don’t text and walk).
- Teach your child the rules of the road for pedestrians:
- Stop before stepping onto the road.
- Look left, right and left again.
- Indicate intent to cross.
- Listen for traffic before stepping out into the street.
- Wait until the way is clear, or all cars have come to a full stop before walking.
- Children’s ability to cross safely by themselves is based on their stage of development. A child should demonstrate and know how to use crosswalks and to judge traffic. These skills develop between the ages of 9 and 11.
Tips for Crossing Streets
- Cross at intersections: Cross at corners with crosswalks and traffic signals.
- Walk on sidewalks: Walk on the inside edge of sidewalks, or facing traffic if there are no sidewalks.
- Look for cars: Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
- Make eye contact: Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Don't run: Don't run or dart into the street.
- Be aware of turning cars: Be aware of cars that are turning or backing up.
- Don't jaywalk: Never jaywalk.
- Put down distractions: Put down phones and headphones when crossing the street.
- Remind children to look for signs that a vehicle is about to move.
- Be aware of others who may be distracted.
- Speak up if you see someone who is in danger.
