WAG Jan. 22-26 | Family Literacy Week, School Council Meeting, Inline Skating Night, Illnesses, Supervision, Surveys, Calgary's Child

It has been a cold and chilly week in Calgary. In spite of the weather we had very few absences and the alien inline skating provided the lift and physical activity we needed this week.

Family Literacy Week

CBE is excited to highlight the love of literacy in the home and school. Sunalta staff will be sharing impactful literacy activities that parents can try to foster the development of literacy (check Google Classroom). Reading and playing fun literacy activities is time well spent and grows the seeds of literacy! See Resources.

School Council Meeting

Thank you to our kindergarten teachers, Ms Beeksma and Ms Kangles as well as Ms Irwin, our music teacher for sharing some poignant, insightful moments about their programs. Gratitude was shared regarding our new purchase of djembe drums ($5000) and inline skating ($6000) funded by our school council and society. Both our council and teachers shared how proud and grateful we are to have such a caring and supportive Sunalta community. It’s a very special school.

Inline Skating Family Night

There was a great turn out at our family inline skating event. Thanks to Kareem, Gavin, and Ashley from alien inline for all of the encouragement and leading the evening. As well thank you to Kirsten A, Kristi, Stacey, Katrina, and youth volunteers Eva, Will, and Jack for their assistance. Alien inline has a skate program if anyone is interested https://alieninline.com/alien-skate-club/ It was incredible to see the improvement in all of our students! Thank you to our volunteers for their support. There are two more Fridays of skating January 26 and February 9.

Illnesses

We want to remind families to be aware of some of the illnesses that occur at this time of year such as pink eye and strep throat, as well as lice. Although we may or may not have occurrences at Sunalta, it has been in the media and parents should watch for signs and symptoms. Website: myhealth.Alberta.ca (symptom checker).

Reminder: Morning Supervision

Morning supervision begins at 8:30am. Please do not drop off your students early unless you are there to watch them.

Attention Grade 4 Parents/Guardians | Alberta Education Assurance Survey

Each year Alberta Education conducts a survey. The Alberta Education Assurance Survey is now open and closes March 3, 2023. Alberta Education uses the Assurance Survey as a way for school authorities to measure their success and assess their progress towards meeting their learning goals. See Resources.

Parents / Legal Guardians of children in grade 4 will receive their survey in the mail, after February 6, 2023, from Alberta Education. You are encouraged to complete the survey online. Students and all teachers will complete their surveys online at school.

Your voice matters. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving. Alberta Education and Calgary Board of Education thank you for returning the parent Assurance Survey promptly.

If you have questions, please contact Larysa Hart at lahart@cbe.ab.ca

Attention Grade 5/6 Parents/Guardians | CBE Survey

Towards the end of January, Grade 5 and 6 students at Sunalta will be participating in an online school perception survey called the CBE Student Survey.

About the CBE Student Survey

  • Allows students to voice their feedback on their experiences at school, the school environment and school improvement programs.
  • Based on their feedback, students have the opportunity to be involved in action plans fostering increased student engagement.
  • The survey should take about 60 to 80 minutes to complete.

The CBE Student Survey is an opportunity for students to:

  • report on themselves, their own abilities, and their accomplishments; and
  • take pride in what they have achieved.

In alignment with CBE’s Education Plan, the results are used in school and district reports to demonstrate that students are:

  • at the centre of all CBE decisions;
  • able to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies they are acquiring across all academic disciplines; and
  • demonstrating Citizenship, Personal Development and Character in and through learning.

If you have questions or would like to request more information about the upcoming implementation of the CBE Student Survey, please contact Larysa Hart at lahart@cbe.ab.ca
