Weekly Update Oct. 23-27 | Forms, Volunteers, School Council, Winter Wear, Interpreters/Translators, Store, Pumpkinella, Scavenger Hunt

Have you completed the 2023-2024 forms in SchoolEngage?

It is very important we have current demographic, citizenship, and annual authorizations for your child. If you have not updated your information, please do so as soon as possible. If you require support, please contact Sunalta Office.

Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers for several classroom field trips and projects. At this time many families have not completed the volunteer clearance and will not be eligible to support our activities. To begin the process, please bring your identification to the office.

School Council Meeting

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend our first council meeting of the year. We had over 20 parents join us to learn about upcoming events, ways to support our beautiful school, information about our new curriculum, and spend time asking questions and sharing opinions with administration. We will be sharing the minutes from the meeting in case families are interested. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 15. Thank you to Mr. Castle, Grade 4, for speaking about their upcoming trip and some curriculum changes this year.

Jackets and Snowpants

As the weather is turning colder, it is important that students have a jacket and possibly snow pants. Students will be expected to go outside for breaks throughout the day as well as waiting until 8:38am to be allowed into the school (unless it’s -20degrees or colder with the wind chill). We are able to provide your child with winter wear. Please contact Mrs. McCrory at cnmccrory@cbe.ab.ca and we can fit your child with winter gear.

Interpreters/Translators

Sunalta school is able to provide interpreters (translators) for meetings. When having academic conversations about students, it is sometimes helpful to have an interpreter to ensure information and conversations are understood. If you would like an interpreter for our November 23/24 Student Learning Conferences, please contact Mrs. Hart at lahart@cbe.ab.ca

Kamp Kiwanis

We had 90 students attend a three-day outdoor camp experience at Kamp Kiwanis. Students participated in archery, shelter-building, star gazing, camp fires, games and sleeping in bunk houses. An incredible time was had by all. Thanks and gratitude to Ms Gulewicz, Mr Barker, Mr Masuch and Ms Dragatis for supervising the entire trip. We are grateful to our school council and society for funding a portion of the trip. Outdoor opportunities to explore our beautiful Kananskis setting is both memorable and a way to create deep learning connections with curriculum.

Pumpkinella is Coming!

Ms Harnett and Mrs McCrory are excited to invite families to decorate and/or carve a pumpkin to bring to school on October 31. More information will be coming. We also have a fun assembly and students are able to bring a costume to wear if they are interested.

From School Council and Society

Sunalta School + Scarboro Community Scavenger Hunt!

Who: Open to all Sunalta School Students and Families!

What: Scavenger Hunt! The school will hand out a Hint Sheet and Map to every student on Friday October 27 (the day of the Hunt). On the map we will outline which houses are participating and what to look for at each stop. Once you find it, you can mark it off on your Hint Sheet and move on to your next stop!

When and Where: Friday, October 27 at 12:15 right after the dismissal bell, is the start time for the hunt!

When you complete all of the stops, show us your card to us at the new playground at Royal Sunalta Park for a celebratory hot chocolate! You have until 2:30 pm on Friday afternoon to complete the hunt.

Remember to bring extra snacks or a lunch with you to school on Friday to eat while or after you hunt!

Why? For fun and community building, and to enjoy all of the great decor Scarboro residents put so much effort into! Not to worry, if you can't do the hunt on Friday, you can still enjoy using the sheet for a fun family activity sometime over the weekend at your leisure.

* Please note that this is an UNSUPERVISED event* and if your child is too young to participate on their own, a parent or age appropriate sibling must attend with them for safety reasons as there will be street crossings and such.

The hunt will take approximately an hour or so to complete.
